Long before it was announced that Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway would be starring opposite Christian Bale as the villains Bane and Catwoman, respectively, in The Dark Knight Rises (TDKR), one of the villains rumored to be appearing in the movie was Hugo Strange. However unlikely it may seem that director Christopher Nolan would throw three villains—four if Joseph Gordon-Levitt ends up playing mobster Alberto Falcone—at Batman, the rumor that Hugo Strange will be appearing in TDKR has resurfaced. According to MyEntertainmentWorld (MEW), a website that bills itself as "a resource for the special needs of motion pictures," not only is Hugo Strange a character in the movie, but he is Batman's primary antagonist.

Hugo Strange actually precedes the Joker in Batman's rogues gallery, first appearing in Detective Comics #36 (February 1940). Strange has gone through several revamps over the decades, but the modern incarnation of the character is that of a psychologist who was enlisted to help the police capture Batman. Strange became so obsessed with Batman that he wanted to kill Batman and take his place. He began dressing as Batman in private and even managed to deduce that the Dark Knight's true identity is Bruce Wayne. If MEW is correct and Strange is in the movie, his blend of psychosis and genius would be a perfect fit for the twisted, but grounded, Gotham City that Nolan has created. He could easily be the mastermind pulling the strings of Bane and Catwoman.
Jonathan Nolan wrote the script for TDKR from an idea conceived by his brother, Christopher, and David S. Goyer. The cast includes Morgan Freeman, Sir Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Josh Pence, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff, Burn Gorman and Juno Temple. The movie is expected to go into production in May.
